This oreliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
CRACK INDICATIONS IN STEAM GENERATOR TUBES In connection with the current maintenance outage which began on June 2, 1979, Eddy Current examinations on_the tubes in Steam Generator "A" were undertaken to determine the source of steam generator leakage detected prior to the outage.
Results of tests on 670 tubes in Steam Generator "A" show that a total of 17 tubes have crack indications and will require plugging.
Two of the seventeen tubes have through wall cracks and the other fifteen have crack indications equal to or greater than 50% of the tube wall thickness.
Because of the extent of tube damage found in Stesm Generator "A" Eddy Current tests will be conducted on a sampling of tubes la Steam Generator "C."
Dependent upon these results, a decision will be made whether or not to inspect Steam Generator "B."
News media interest is expected.
The licensee plans to issue a news release.
A news r-lease by the NRC is not planned.
A Region V reactor inspecte will be on site commencing June 6, 1979, to followup on this occurrence.
Region V (San Francisco) received telephone notification of this occurrence from the Plent Engineer at 2:30 PM on June 4, 1979 and at 9:30 AM on June 5, 1979.
