September 17, 2019 Mr. Peter Hastings Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Quality Kairos Power LLC 707 W Tower Ave Alameda, CA 94501
SUBJECT:
CONFIRMATION OF REVISION TO KAIROS POWER LLC, REGULATORY ANALYSIS FOR THE KAIROS POWER FLUORIDE SALT-COOLED, HIGH TEMPERATURE REACTOR TOPICAL REPORT (CAC NO. 000431)
Dear Mr. Hastings:
By letter dated January 24, 2019, Kairos Power LLC (Kairos) submitted for U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff review, Regulatory Analysis for the Kairos Power Fluoride Salt-Cooled, High Temperature Reactor Topical Report, (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML19024A483). The NRC staff accepted the report for review by letter dated March 6, 2019 (ADAMS Accession No. ML19059A377).
The NRC staff sent a preliminary set of questions to Kairos on August 15, 2019 (ADAMS Accession No. ML19228A233). These preliminary questions sought to clarify the staffs understanding of the information presented in the report prior to the formal preparation of requests for additional information. On September 9, 2019, the NRC staff met with Kairos in a public meeting via teleconference to discuss the preliminary questions and facilitate NRC staff understanding of the report. During this meeting, Kairos stated that it intends to submit a revision to the report by October 31, 2019. The NRC staff agreed that this revision could contribute to a more effective and efficient review of the report. Provided the revised report is submitted by October 31, 2019, the NRC staff could issue its draft safety evaluation by November 29, 2019.
The NRC staff will continue its review of the Kairos report, including the preparation of any necessary requests for additional information, following receipt of the revised report. The NRC staff should be notified as soon as practicable if Kairos is unable to provide the revised report by October 31, 2019. If a revised report is not received by the agreed upon date, the NRC staff may elect to continue the review of the current version of the report to prevent delays in completion of this activity.
P. Hastings 2 If you have questions regarding this matter, please contact Stewart Magruder at (301) 348-5766 or Stewart.Magruder@NRC.gov.
Sincerely,
/RA/
Steven T. Lynch, Acting Chief Advanced Reactor Licensing Branch Division of Advanced Reactors Office of New Reactors Project No. 99902069
