Initial NRC staff comments on "Regulatory Analysis for the Kairos Power Fluoride Salt-Cooled, High Temperature Reactor Topical Report" Attachments: Kairos_RegAnalysis_topical NRC comments (STL+SLM).docx

Dear Darrell,

By letter dated January 24, 2018, Kairos Power LLC (Kairos) Submitted for U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff review, Regulatory Analysis for the Kairos Power Fluoride Salt-Cooled, High Temperature Reactor Topical Report (ADAMS Accession No. ML19024A483). Kairos is requesting the NRCs approval of the applicability and classification of the regulations listed in the topical report. By letter dated March 6, 2019 (ADAMS Accession No. ML19029A377), the NRC staff found that the material presented provides the technical information in sufficient detail to enable the staff to complete a detailed technical review.

Given the lesser scope and depth of the acceptance review as compared to the detailed technical review, there may be instances in which issues that impact the NRC staff ability to complete the detailed technical review are identified despite completion of an adequate acceptance review.

The NRC staff performed a review of understanding and developed comprehension comments and questions, attached, with the purpose of:

Obtaining clarification regarding material in the technical report Promptly identifying areas for additional information Facilitating discussions and continuation of the effective communication In some instances, comprehension questions may evolve into request for additional information (RAIs). If RAIs are needed, you will be advised by separate correspondence. In accordance with 10 CFR 2.390 the staff will discuss the comprehension questions and comments in a public meeting, as possible, while respecting the proprietary information in the report.
