Gentlemen:
Attached for your review is a proposed change to the Arkansas Nuclear One-Unit 2 (ANO-2) Technical Specifications concerning seismic monitoring inctrumentation surveillance.
ANO-2 Technical Specification 4.3.3.3.1 and corresponding Table 4.3-4 require a CHANNEL FUNCTIONAL TEST of the Triaxial Response-Spectrum Recorder 2XR-8350 on a semi-annual (SA) basis.
This recorder has no capability for testing without recalibrating the instrument.
Present standards (ANSI /ANS-2.2-1978) require calibration of mechanical instru-ments only at 18 months or a refueling interval.
Our vendor for this instrument has strongly recommended that we change our calibration in-tervals to agree.ith this standard as it is possible to degrade rather than improve per. otrance by overtesting and calibra*ing mechanical in-struments. We tnsrefore request to change the CHANNEL FUNCTIONAL TEST interval to at least once every 18 months (R).
Also, the Triaxial Time-History Accelerographs.'.CS-8001 and ACS-8002 have no capability for CHANNEL CHECK as is now required on a monthly basis. Complete calibration is our only means of meeting this speci-fication. Again, present standards require calibration only on a re-fueling interval in order to reduce the~ chance for damage. We there-fore request to remove the monthly CHANNEL CHECK requirement for these instruments.
