and Se-31 8 Mr. A. E. Lundvall, Jr.

Vice President - Supply Baltimore Gas & Electric Company P. O. Box 1475-Baltimore, Varyland 21203

Dear Mr. Lundull:

The Commission is issuing the enclosed Safety Evaluation to document our review of the acceptability of:

a) modifications to the chemical and volume control system (CVCS) to reduce pipe cracking; and b) interim operation of Calvert Cliffs Units Nos.1 and 2 until such modifications are completed.

Based on our review of the information you submitted on January 23 and September 11, 1979, we conclude that Items a and b above are acceptable.

This conclusion is based on your September 11, 1979 comitments to:

1.

Replace the Schedule 10 CVCS piping be. ween the charging pump suction inlet and the first suction isolation valve with Schedule 40 piping, 2.

Install 5 gallon capacity stabilizers in the charging pump suction lines,

, 3.

Replace the existing 21/2 gallon capacity stabilizers in the charging pump discharge lines with 5 gallon capacity units, 4.

Complete the modifications to Unit I during the Spring 1980 refueling outage and Unit 2 during the Fall 1980 refueling outage, and 5.

Operate the CVCS in a conservative method (i.e., control the volume control tank pressure at about 40 psig and reduce the nitrogen pressure in the charging pump discharge dampeners during low systen pressure) until the CVCS modifications are completed.

Sincerely, Robert U. Reid, Chief Operating Reactors Branch =4 Division of Operating Reactors
