Docket No. 50-289 l
OCT 3 01972 l
l Metropolitan Edison Company ATTN:
Mr. John G. Miller Vice President P. O. Box 542 Reading, Pennsylvania Centlemen:
We find that we need additional information to complete our review of your application for an operating license for the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1.
The specific information required is described in the enclosure.
In order to maintain our licensing review schedule we will need a I
completely adequate response by November 20, 1972. Please inform us within seven (7) days after receipt of this letter of your confirmation l
of the schedule or the date you will be able to meet. If you cannot meet our specified date or if your reply is not fully responsive to i
our requests it is highly likely, that the overall schedule for completing l
the licensing review for this project will have to be extended. Since reassignment of the staff's efforts will require completion of the new assignment prior to returning to this project, the extent of extension will most likely be greater than the extent of delay in your l
response.
I Please contact us if you have any aguestions regarding the enclosed requests.
Sincerely, Original sigoed by K. Kniel K. Kniel, Chief Pressurized Water Reactor Branch No. 2 Directorate of Licensing

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION METROPOLITAN EDISOU CDMPANY DOCKET NO. 50-289 5.0 CONTAINMEET SYSTEM AND O'HER SPECIAL STRUCIURES 5.27 With regard to reactor building compartment differential pressure analyses:
5.27.1 Identify the reactor building compartments analysed. Provide the reactor coolant system break size and the free volme and vent area for each compartu.
5.27.2 Describe the smalytical model used to perform the analyses and discuss the assumptions in the model, including moisture carry-over and the time steps used in predicting pressure differentials across compartment walls.
5.27.3 Discuss the results of the analyses performed for each compartment, including the==v4==
absolute and differential pressures attained, and Phe jet forces on the compartment walls.
5.27.4 Discuss the structural design capability of each compartment to withstand the differential pressure and jet forces resulting from loss-of-coolant accidents for each compartment.
