June 13, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF AN EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-79-67AT f

This preliminary notification provides updated information of safety or public interest significance.

Facility: Three Mile Island Unit 2 Middla.own, Pennsylvania (DN-50-320)

Subject:

NUCIIAR INCIDENT AT TIIREE MILE ISLAND Operational:

1.

The average coolant temperature is 155 degrees F and the highest incore tharncouple temperature reading is 273 degrees 7, Core cooling is being c:aintained by natural circulation.

Pressure is about 350 psi with the pressurizer in solid operation.

Steam is being admitted to tce rain con-denser through the turbine bypass valve from the A Steam Generator.

2.

Re.tctor building water level is being measured daily, and is new 7.0 i 0.5 feet above floor level. This lower than previously reported level is due to refinement of the measurement technique, and doe, not reflect an acutal level decrease.

3.

Preoperational testing for the Spent Fuel Pool Tank Farm, Once-Through Steaa Generator "B" Long-Term Cooling System, the modifie.1 radwaste treatment sfaten (EPIC 02), and the pressure / volume control systea pro-grossed slowly during the past week due to various cperational/ pro urement problens encountered.

The terting may be completed within the next two weeks.

EcVironnental Status:

Enviro nestal radiation levels remain consistent with natural backgrmind lavels.

Airborce releases have been below Technical Specification limits.

Fro:a June 11-17, 42 air samples, 2 milk samples, 4 vegetation secples and 2 soil s'opics were collected by the NRC.

All ar.alytical re mits were less than MDt.. EPA air, water and milk samples collected during the week (up to June 15) showed no detectable activity frca IMI.
