OUESTIO?:
How many plants have operating licenses?
At:SWER:
There are presently 70 plants licensed to operate.
The list of those plants is contained in Enclosure 1.
This list does not include government experimental plants because they are not licensed.
It only includes plants owned and operated by public or private utilities for the purpose of electric power production.
QUESTION:
How many plants are closed down for reasons other than routine maintenance?
ANSWER:
Power plants during any given month are shutdown for a variety of reasons including equipment failure, maintenance or testing, refueling, and other reasons.
This information is reported in the NRC's Operating Units Status Report (NUREG-0020) which is published monthly.
Units not presently operating for reasons more significant than those mentioned above are listed in Enclosure 2 with an explanation of their status.
QUESTIO:::
liow many serious accidents have there been since the first commercial, licensed power plant went into operation?
ANSEER:
The following are the most serious accidents in licensed reactor facilities, i.e.,
those that have resulted in significant fuel damage or presented a serious potential for danger to the public health and safety.
This does not include fuel failures as a result of normal operations or defective fuel.
UNIT REACTOR TYPE
- 1. Fermi 1 - Oct.
5, 1966 LMFBR 2.
Browns Ferry 1 & 2 BWR March 22, 1975 3.
. OUESTIO.',:
How many people live in a five, ten, and twenty mile radius of operating nuclear power plants?
ANSWER:
A report entitled " Demographic Statistics Pertaining to Nuclear Power Reactor Sites" (NUREG-0348) published by NRC contains such estimates based primarily on 1970 census data. is a table showing the relevant plant by plant data.
Based on this data there are approximately 600,000 people living within a 5 mile radius of all licensed nuclear plants; 2.5 million with a 10 mile radius; and about 11 million within a 20 mile radius.
QUESTION:
How many scientists were involved in the Three Mile Island accident and where did they come from?
ANSWER:
From available information it is not possible to specifically say how many scientists /
engineers were involved in the Three Mile Island accident.
Records show there are now 1482 people at the site, including caterers and other support personnel.
This is in addition to the normal complement of about 500 site employees normally there.
(Spread out over 3 shifts a day, 7 days a week). indicates participation by government agencies, architect / engineers, utilities, manufacturers, and other technically oriented organizations.
The list does not include significant help by people off site, such as Hanford, Sandia, Oak Ridge, etc.
The Energy Daily reports there are well over 800 technical people from various elements of the nuclear industry on-site to participate in the "TMI recovery organization."
QUESTION:
Hou many times has the Incident Center been used as in the Three Mile Island case?
ANSWER:
The Incident Response Center was conceived as a result of the fire a t Browns Ferry.
It has been activated twice for events involving reactors, and once for an incident involving the theft of nuclear material.
The specifics are as follo.s:
97 059
, I.
Activated A.
Reactors (1) Ft. St. Vrain Incident when it was thought that a large radioactive release occurred.
(2) Three Mile Island-2 nuclear accident.
E.
Other GE-h'ilmington - nuclear material stolen.
II.
