%.....o August 29, 1979 MEMORANDUM FOR D. Boyd, Section Chief, Reactor Projects Section 3 FROM:

C. H. Brown, Reactor Inspector

SUBJECT:

LICENSE PINEWAL OF RESEARCH REACTORS (H07001937)

Iowa State University This facility has no major problems and has recently had their Technical Specifications approval. They have been responsive to the Commission's requests.

They perform at the average for nonpower facilities in the region.

University of Illinois The U. of I. has two reactors side-by-side with the smaller LOPRA up for relicensing.

The facility has been operated with the average or slightly above the rest of the region.

There have been no major problems in the last few years. The LOPRA has the aluminum clad fuel elements which developed leaks a few years ago.

The elements were repaired without incident.

U. of bussouri (Rolla)

I have not visited this facility, but a review indicated that there have been no problems of any magnitude.

The plant appears to be operated at about the average of the region.

These three plants have been responsive to the region's requests and I wouldn't foresee any problem if the licenses were continued.
