SUBJECT:

Beaver Valley Power Station - Unit No. 2 Concrete Waste Water Disposal NRC Letter dated June 11, 1979 Docket No. 50-412 Gentlemen:

This letter is in response to your letter dated June 11, 1979 on the Deficiency reported at the waste concrete disposal area during Inspection 79-02.

This Deficiency resulted from high pH readings observed in effluents from the disposal area where waste concrete is dumped and the empty trucks are washed out.

Since the high readings were first noted on March 1,1979, several corrective actions have been taken to alleviate the problem and to provide information that will be useful in deter-mining a permanent solution.

These actions include restoring the hay bale likes, treating the waste water, and efforts by Stone and Webster to develop a scheme to achieve compliance.

These actions are complicated by the relatively small amount of water released into the waste area.

Most of the water evaporates before it reaches the last hay bale dike.

A method of retaining the waste products produced by wash-ing out empty concrete trucks is being developed to ensure that no untreated or ineffectively treated waste w'ter shall at any time be discharged into the waters of the Commonwealth.

Special care will be used to prevent accidental spills or similar unusual discharges of any waste materials.

Facilities to achieve com-pliance will be completed and in use by August 6, 1979.
