CONSUMERS POWER COMPANY PALISADES NUCLEAR PLANT DOCKET 50-255

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE FOR THE MONTH OF JULY 1978 GENERAL During the month, the Plant generally operated between 80 and 90 percent of full power.

The derate resulted primarily from turbine backpressure considerations.

At the beginning of this month, the Plant was shutdown in continuation of a maintenance outage which had begun on June 28th.

SPECIFIC ITEMS OF INTEREST 7-4-78 7-8-78 7-9-78 7-31-78 Placed the unit on line after a 73.4 hour4.62963e-5 days
0.00111 hours
6.613757e-6 weeks
1.522e-6 months
outage.

During this outage, repairs were made to six CRDM's to reduce seal leakage, and CRDM No. 8, which had previously stuck (re:

LER 78-016), was restored to an operable status.

The Plant came off line to make repairs to a CRDM cooling fan.

This maintenance was performed with the Reactor in a hot shutdown condition.

After completion of repairs and while raising Reactor power, a trip from low Steam Generator water level occurred.

The outage lasted 17.6 hours6.944444e-5 days
0.00167 hours
9.920635e-6 weeks
2.283e-6 months
.

Loss of steam to the air ejectors resulted in a loss of vacuum which led to a Reactor trip.

The steam loss was caused by a failure in the pressure control valve which supplies steam to the air ejectors.

Repairs were made to the valve and the Plant was returned to operation after a 7.8 hour9.259259e-5 days
0.00222 hours
1.322751e-5 weeks
3.044e-6 months
outage.

The Plant was shutdown to permit repairs to be made to leaking CRDM's.

While shutting down, a loss of electrical power to two primary coolant pumps resulted in a Reactor trip from low PCS flow.

This outage, which was still in progress at the end of the month, contributed 2.3 hours3.472222e-5 days
8.333333e-4 hours
4.960317e-6 weeks
1.1415e-6 months
of outage time to the month of July.
