Ken, By letter dated May 24, 2018, Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) requested relief from certain requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI.

This relief request, VEGP-ISI-RR-03, pertains to examination coverage of some pressurizer and steam generator welds achieved during the third inservice inspection interval at the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant, Units 1 and 2.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff reviewed the submittal and determined that the additional information in the attachment is needed to complete its review. During a call on August 10, 2018, it was agreed that SNC would respond within 45 days of the date of this email.

This relief request, VEGP-ISI-RR-03, pertains to examination coverage of some pressurizer and steam generator welds achieved during the third inservice inspection interval at the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant, Units 1 and 2.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staffs reviewed the submittal and determined that the following additional information is needed to complete its review.

Request for Additional Information 1 For the components associated with this relief request, please provide the following information:

a. A confirmation that the peak stress in the ultrasonic testing (UT) missed region is likely to be similar to or less than the peak stress in the UT covered region, which demonstrates that the UT results with the reported coverage are representative of the entire component weld. This confirmation should be based on stress reports for each pressurizer nozzle-to-vessel weld (Category B-D, Item No. B3.110 with coverage from 15 percent to 55.9 percent).

b. Past plant-specific and fleet operating experience, if available, regarding leakage and UT indications detected from all affected pressurizer and steam generator welds (Category B-B, Item Nos. B2.11 and B2.40; and Category B-D, Item No. B3.110) that required flaw evaluations or repairs.
