NRC-2018-0017-0003 Requirements for the Indefinite Storage of Spent Nuclear Fuel Document:

NRC-2018-0017-DRAFT-0065 Comment on FR Doc # 2018-05776 Submitter Information Name: Mary Jo Poole General CommentI am writing with deep concerns over the storage of nuclear wast e at San Onofre ranging from the safety of the containers to the location. A significant issue is the need for appropriate MONITORING of any system that is used for this waste. This monitoring should be the most advanced technology availa ble as this kind of disaster cann ot be undone. As outlined in the Citizen's Oversight HELMS pr oposal - Monitored includes standard 7/24 electronic monitoring of critical parameters: temperature, radiation flux, airflow, etc.

Additionally, the Commission should address the disseminati on of information available through a monitoring system as we ll as information that the publ ic should have as a matter of safety. Please ensure that there are systems in place for first res ponders, local hea lth facilities, the county public health system, and a well-funded public service campaign to educate the general public. There are examples that can be used to glean information on how best to deal with this waste and its unfortu nate hazards. Given the number of facilities th at will be decommissioned in the near future, it would behoove this Commission to address these matters now to both prevent a crisis at San Onof re and to prepare for th e future. Thank you for your time.Page 1 of 106/06/2018https://www.fdms.gov/
