i NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 February 27, 1980 LICENSEE:

Virginia Electric and Power Company (VEPCO)

FACILITY:

Surry, Units land 2

SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF MEETING HELD ON FEBRUARY 8, 1980 WITH VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY The subject meeting was held with VEPCO and Stone and Webster (S&W) to discuss modifications to the containment spray system.

A list of attendees is attached.

The changes to the containment spray systems involved the caustic addition system.

In its May 9, 1977, submittal, VEPCO proposed to use an eductor to take the caustic from the caustic addition system and supply it to the contain-ment spray.

In its January 24, 1980, letter, VEPCO proposed to use a gravity feed system.

The reason for not using the eductor was there were potential computer modeling problems with the eductor system.

Specifically, eductor performance could not be modeled with sufficient certainty to ensure the appropriate range of spray pH throughout the duration of containment spray.

The gravity feed system was discussed and VEPCO was told that it could be acceptable if the pH end point could be demonstrated to be adequate (FSAR value) and the system tested to show that it works.

VEPCO committed to provide an analysis of the pH versus time for the spray nozzle (maximum and minimum values) and the pH versus time in the sump (minimum value).

A test program will also be performed.

The task program will be submitted to the NRC on or about February 26, 1980.

The test will be performed on or about M~rch 10, 1980, and details on the pH time history will be provided about March 14, 1980.
