UNITED STATES NUCLEA".t REGULATORY COMMISSION Docket Nos. 50-272, 50-311 and 50-354 WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555 December 1, 1992 LICENSEE:

Public Service Electric and Gas Company FACILITY:

Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1 and 2, and Hope Creek Generating Station

SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF MEETING WITH PUBLIC SERVICE ELECTRIC AND GAS COMPANY

{PSE&G) ON NOVEMBER 3, 1992, REGARDING CURRENT LICENSING ISSUES A meeting was held at the NRC offices in Rockville, Maryland, on November 3, 1992, to discuss the status of current licensing issues at Salem and Hope Creek.

These meetings allow the staff to be apprised of upcoming license change requests that are planned by the licensee and allows the licensee to find out the status of license changes that are undergoing staff review.

Significant new requests for the NRC staff review and approval are:

1. Submittal of the Integrated Schedules for Salem and Hope Creek.

The submittal is expected in late November 1992.

The submittal is expected to follow the policy statement issued by the NRC.

2.

PSE&G intends to rerack the spent fuel pools at both Salem units. The application for the reracking is expected to be in within the next 3 months.

Two major license changes that are currently being reviewed by the staff are the deletion of the main steam isolation valve {MSIV) leakage control system at Hope Creek, and the changes to the diesel generator surveillance requirements at Salem.

The status of these requests was discussed.

The Salem request is currently being reviewed by the NRC.

It is expected that the Salem amendments wfl l be issued in February 1993.

The Hope Creek request is currently being reviewed by NRC and the safety evaluation is expected in January 1993.

PSE&G was requested to provide the staff their schedule for implementing the MSIV leakage control system change at Hope Creek.

PSE&G is considering the installation of a digital feedwater control system at Salem 1 and 2.

They asked if this change could be made with only a 50.59 evaluation and no NRC staff approval.

As long as there are no changes to the technical specifications and auxiliary feedwater is not involved, then NRC 9212100054 921201-PDR ADOCK 05000272 p

PDR staff approval is not required. If there are changes to either the technical specifications or the auxiliary feedwater system, then NRC staff approva 1 of those changes is required.
