UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 August' 28, 1990 Docket No. 50-272 Mr. Steven E. Miltenberger Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer Public Service Electric & Gas Company Post Office Box 236 Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey 08038

Dear Mr. Miltenberger:

SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, STEAM GENERATOR SURVEILLANCE REQUIREMENTS, SALEM GENERATING STATION, UNIT NO. 1 (TAC NO. 75172)

In reviewing your amendment request, dated September 13, 1989 (LCR 88-09),

  • that proposed changes to the steam generator surveillance Technical Specifications (TSs) for Salem 1 and 2, the staff has determined that a.dditional i.nformation is needed to complete the review.

One of the proposed changes to the Salem 1 TSs was to change the definition of "Defect" by deleting the statement "Any tube which does not permit the passage of the eddy current inspection probe shall be deemed a defective tube." This particular requirement was included in the TSs, to require *plugging of tubes that had been "dented" to the point that the probe would not pass.

In order to complete our review, the following additional information is requested:

1.. Has 100% of tubes been examined and the amount of "denting" measured?
2.

Your basis for the assumption that tube "denting" has been corrected. Please include:

a.

Historic data on tubes that would not pass the eddy current probe.

b.

Diameter of probe(s).used.

c.

Profilometer data for tubes.

3.

What action does PSE&G propose to take on steam generator tubes that will not allow the passage of the eddy current probe?
