SUBJECT:

BIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT, SEA TURTLE OCCURRENCES AT SALEM GENERATING STATION (TAC NOS. 69356/69357)

In your letter of August 19, 1988, you requested the NRC to reinitiate formal consultation on Salem Generating Station to include the effects of sea turtle impingements on the trash bars of the main circulating water system.

Pursuant to 50 CFR 402, paragraph 402.08, the NRC, by letter dated December 14, 1988 has designated Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G), the licensee for Salem, the party responsible for the preparation of the biological assessment.

PSE&G 1s schedule for preparation of the biological assessment is about 12 weeks from the approval date.

The NRC will furnish guidance and supervision during preparation and, upon completion, will independently review and evaluate the biological assessment.
