ATTN:

Mr. Corbin A. McNeill, Jr.

Gentlemen:

JAN 2 5 1988

Subject:

Combined Inspection Nos. 50-272/87-37 and 50-311/87-37

A routine safety inspection of the water chemistry control program was

conducted by Mr. H. Bicehouse of this office on December 14-18, 1987 at the

Salem Generating Station. Our findings were discussed with Mr. J. Zupko, Jr.

and others of your staff at the conclusion of the inspection on December 18,

1987.

The areas examined during this inspection are described in the NRC Region I

Combined Inspection Report which is enclosed with this letter. Within these

areas, the inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures and

representative records, interviews with personnel and observations by the

inspector.

Within the scope of the inspection, no violations or deviations were

identified. However, the apparent lack of temperature control of samples

provided to inline chemical instrumentation and acceptance criteria for

comparison of inline and laboratory readings of the same parameter raise

serious concerns regarding the accuracy of your inline chemical measurements.

We understand that your staff shares our concerns and has made plans to

resolve the problem noted.

We

request that you provide a written reply

within thirty days of the date of this letter detailing the corrective actions

to be taken and planned dates for their completion.

Your cooperation with us in this matter is appreciated.

Sincerely,

Thomas T. Martin, Director

Division of Radiation Safety

and Safeguards
