Combined Inspection Report Nos. 50-272/86-25 and 50-311/86-25
This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Mr. E. H. Gray of
this office on September 8-12, 1986 at the Salem Nuclear Generating Station
Units 1 and 2 of activities authorized by NRC License Nos. DPR-70 and DPR-75
and to the discussions of our findings held by Mr. Gray with Mr. L. Miller of
your staff at the conclusion of the inspection.
Areas examined during this inspection are described in the NRC Region I
Inspection Report which is enclosed with this letter. Within these areas, the
inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures and representative
records, interviews with personnel, and observations by the inspector.
Within the scope of this inspection, no items of noncompliance were observed.
However, certain activities appear to be deviations from your commitments in
response to the Requirements of IE Bulletin 82-02.
You are requested to
initiate corrective actions relating to review of controls in the area of RCPB
bolting practice as necessary to meet the objectives of !EB 82-02 and to
respond to the Notice of Deviation in accordance with the instructions in
Appendix A.
Further, in your response, please provide a discussion of your
actions to assure that NRC bulletin commitments are being properly incorporated
and implemented.
The responses directed by this letter and the accompanying Notice are not
subject to the clearance procedures of the Office of Management and Budget
as required by the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1980, PL 96-511.
