Box 236 Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey 08038 Nuclear Department Ref: LCR-83-19 February 25, 1985 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 Attention: Mr. Steven A. Varga, Chief Operations Reactors Branch 1 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION REQUEST FOR AMENDMENT SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 The purpose of this letter is to confirm a telephone conversation between your Mr. T. Dunning, Section Leader -

ICSB and Mr. R. Beckwith of our licensing staff, in which, based on an evaluation performed by Westinghouse Electric Corporation, we justified our request for amendment (LCR 83-19) pertaining to overtemperature-delta T reactor trip channel response times.

To satisfy environmental qualification requirements, PSE&G replaced original Reactor Coolant System temperature detectors (RTDs) manufactured by Rosemount with qualified detectors manufactured by RdF Company. The new RTDs, having slower response times, were evaluated by Westinghouse at the request of PSE&G to ensure that FSAR analyses for accidents relying on measurements by these RTDs remained valid. Attachment I provides the Westinghouse evaluation.
