SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT FOR FINAL RESOLUTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION OF ELECTRIC EQUIPMENT IMPORTANT TO SAFETY -
SALEM UNIT NO. 1 The staff has completed their review of the environmental qualification of electric equipment important to safety for Salem Unit 1 for compliance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.49, the licensee's proposed resolution for the deficiencies identified in the SER dated January 21, 1983, together with the July 15, 1982 Franklin Research Center Technical Evaluation Report, and justification for continued operation.
The results of our review are discussed in the enclosed Safety Evaluation.
On April 24, 1984, a meeting was held with representatives from Public Service Electric and Gas Company to discuss their proposed method of resolution for each of the environmental qualification deficiencies identified.
Discussions also included Public Service Electric and Gas Company's general methodology for compliance with 10 CFR 50.49, "Environmental Qualification of Electric Equipment Important to Safety for Nuclear Power Plants, 11 which became effective February 22, 1983, and justification for continued operation for those equipment items for which environmental qualification is not yet completed.
The licensee provided a submittal by letter dated June 8, 1984 addressing the above subjects and documenting the discussions held at the meeting.
Additional information was transmitted to the NRC by letters of September 7 and November 6, 1984.
Based on discussions during the meeting and the results of our review of the licensee's June 8, September 7 and November 6, 1984 submittals, we have concluded that Public Service Electric and Gas Company's Equipment Qualification Program is in compliance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.49, that the proposed resolution for each of the environmental 6412130013 84120572 PDR ADOCK 050002 p
