REQUIREMENTS FOR EMERGENCY RESPONSE CAPABILITY SUPPLEMENT 1 TO NUREG 0737 REVISED INTEGRATED SCHEDULE NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 In a letter dated August 18, 1983, PSE&G committed to revising its milestone implementation schedule for Emergency Response Capability (Generic Letter 82-33).

PSE&G hereby submits its revised schedule (attached) and provides the following update.

1.

Safety Parameter Display System (SPDS)

PSE&G has awarded a contract for a Data Acquisition System (including the SPDS).

Based on discussions with the vendor, we project that the SPDS will be operable and operators trained by December 1986.

2.

Control Room Design Review (CRDR)

A final CRDR summary report is being prepared and will be submitted in the near future.

3.

Regulatory Guide 1.97 Implementation on Unit 2 has been further delayed because the radiation monitor vendor is unable to provide equipment for the electrical penetration area until February 1984.

We now project that implementation will be complete in March 1984.

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 12/19/83 In response to a request from the NRC, PSE&G transmitted a revised implementation report for Regulatory Guide 1.97 on September 21, 1983.

Emergency Operating Procedures {EOP's)

The start date for operator training in revised EOP's (without SPDS) has slipped to February 1984 because of delays in acceptance testing of the simulator.

However, the September 1984 date for implementing this phase of the revised EOP's is still valid.

Based on the schedule provided by the SPDS vendor, training in EOP's incorporating the SPDS can begin in October 1985 and should be completed in December 1986.

Emergency Response Facilities (ERF's)

A contractor for the Technical Support Center {TSC) was chosen and structural modifications are being made.

SPDS installation in the TSC should be complete by December 1985.

PSE&G requests that the NRC provide a response to our letters of April 20, 1981, and July 18, 1983, which requested relief from the requirement for a backup Emergency Operations Facility (EOF).

PSE&G emphasizes that the projected dates in this integrated schedule are contingent on vendor schedules and unit outages.

These dates will be refined as more information becomes available.
