NRC FORM 318 (10-80) NRCM 0240 OFFICIAL RECORD COPY USGPO: 1981-335-960

The Honorable Hilliam V. Roth, Jr. NUREG-0737 (Enclosure 3).

NUREG-0737 included information about schedules, applicability, method of implementation review, submittal dates, and clarifi-cation of technical positions. The review of each power plant against the guidelines of NUREG-0737 is a current and major on-going effort within the NRC staff. Enclosure 4 is a Safety Evaluation Report for Salem documenting, in part, the status of NUREG-0737 items. Additional Safety Evaluations are prepared periodically as the status of these items change.

With respect to the lack of an adequate emergency warning system, Enclosure 5 is a copy of a Federal Register Notice which proposes to extend the date by which prompt public notification systems must be oper~tional around all nuclear power plants. All operating plants will be required to comply with these regulations. The reason the date is being changed from July l, 1981 to February 1, 1982, is that many licensees, due to unforeseen difficulties, were unable to meet the original date.

Public Service Electric and Gas Company has stated, by letter dated November 4, 1981 (Enclosure 6), that it expects to complete the siren system at Salem by February 1, 1982.

I hope that this letter has provided the information you require.
