SUMMARY
OF MARCH 20, 2018, MEETING WITH DUKE ENERGY PROGRESS, LLC TO DISCUSS REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION RESPONSE REGARDING THE SPENT FUEL STORAGE POOL CRITICALITY ANALYSES LICENSE AMENDMENT REQUEST FOR SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, UNIT 1 (EPID L-2017-LLA-0303)
On March 20, 2018, a Category 1 public teleconference was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff and representatives of Duke Energy Progress, LLC (Duke Energy, the licensee) at NRC Headquarters, Rockville, Maryland. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the response to a request for additional information (RAI) associated with the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1 (HNP) Spent Fuel Storage Pool Criticality Analyses license amendment request (LAR). The meeting notice and agenda, dated March 8, 2018, are available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) under Accession No. ML18067A128. A list of attendees is enclosed.
The NRC staff and Duke Energy discussed the MCCB RAI #1 response provided by Duke Energy in a letter dated January 18, 2018 (ADAMS Accession No. ML18018B974). Specifically, the NRC staff needed to better understand how Duke Energy will maintain control of the proposed Metamic Rack Insert Monitoring Program for the spent fuel storage pools A and B.
Duke Energy is proposing to place the monitoring program in a procedure that would be referenced in the HNP Updated Final Safety Analysis Report and subject to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Section 50.59 (10 CFR 50.59) screening process. The licensee stated it will supplement the RAI response by April 13, 2018.
No regulatory decisions or commitments were made at the meeting. Two members of the public were in attendance and no comments were provided.
