Public Service Electric and Gas Company 80 Park Place Newark, N.J. 07101 Phone 2011430-7000 April 24, 1979 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Corrunission Washington, D.C. 20555 Attention: *Mr. Albert Schwencer, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #1 Division of Operating Reactors Gentlemen:
Ref. 78-BA
- g~~i~Ni~RI:~=~~N REGULATORY DOCr\\ET FILE COPY FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE DPR-70 UNIT NO. 1 SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET NO. 50-272 In response to a request by Mr. Gary Zech, we offer the following information concerning deletion of certain valves from Type "C" leak rate testing:
The only identifiable potential paths for leakage from the containment atmosphere to the main steam line are through four one-inch hydrotest vent connections, one located at the high point of each of four main steam lines inside con-tainment.
These connections are presently double valved with one-inch manual globe valves.
As extra assurance of leak tightne~s, the nipple on the outermost valve has been capped and tackwelded.
To ensure that a leakage path from the reactor coolant system to the main steam line does not exist during LOCA via breaches in the steam generator tubes, station procedures ensure that the sedondary side water level in the steam generators is fed by auxiliary feed and remains at the normal hot 0% Power level which is 33% into the narrow range band.
This level is above the tube bundle and feed ring.
