Dear Commissioner Gallagher,
I am deeply concerned about the storage of the nuclear waste at San Onofre. It is abundantly clear that Edison Co. has not handled this issue in a way that is safe for the area. There is no possible way NRC can meet its mission to "ensure adequate protection of public health and safety and the environment" if there isn't vast changes made to these temporary containers. These thin-walled storage containers would be much too vulnerable for this densely populated area and the surrounding environment. Why take the chance that these welded canisters, which they admit are vulnerable to cracks, that cannot be fully inspected (inside or out), and cannot be repaired, maintained and monitored to detect or even prevent radiological leaks? The risks are much too great. I strongly urge the NRG to make sure the public and environment remains safe by making a better plan on how to deal with the toxic waste. I cannot stress enough, that the safety of the area is much too valuable to risk a plan for storage that doesn't take into consideration every citizen, young and old, every animal, every sea creature, every grain of sand, that would be affected by the possibility of a likely catastrophe.
