SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF MEETING WITH CONSUMERS POWER COMPANY PALISADES STEAM GENERATOR REPLACEMENT PROJECT NARROW GAP WELDING (TAC NO. 76069)
A meet irig was held at NRC Headquarters on July 10, 1990 to discuss. one*
~ ~arti~uJar-aspect of the ~alisades Steam Generator* Replacement-Project~ the -
use of the narrow gap weld technique on the primary coolant system piping cuts.
A list of meeting attendees is provided as Attachment 1.
The purpose of t.ht> rr:eet ing was, for Consumers P.owE:r Company to present. its code reconciliation of* the narrow gap weld method.
Additionally, the licensee presented a surrJr:ary of its weld procedure qualification, performance qualification, and their plans for mock-up-training and construction and pre.~er.vicE:; e:xaminatipJ!_S. _The _han9outs _su_mmar_izirig these.issues in greater depth are provided as Attachment 2.,
The process "Narrow Gap Welding" is simply pulsed ~as tungsten arc welding utilizing a ~arrow groove techniqu~. The precess offers several advantages over conventional weld methods - reduced welding time, a smaller heat affected area, and a more favorable residual stress distribution. The stated disadvantage to this process is that proper fit up is more critical due to the smaller weld width.
Consumers Pm1er Company and Bechtel personnel discussed in depth the various ASME code requirements associated with machine welding.
In particular, machine welding essential variables were verified to be adequate in controlling the narrow gap weld process. The staff cor1curred with the Consumers Power Company determination that the narrow gap weld process is covered under the current codes.
The staff reiterated the importance of obtaining a proper fit up and maintaining adequate personnel qualifications
