SUMMARY
OF MEETING ~JITH CONSUMERS PO,WER *COMPANY, PALISADES,..
.AND BECHTEL -.KWU ALLIANCE
. STEAM GENERATOR REPLACEMENT PROJECT (TA(* 760~9)
A meeting was* held in Chattanooga, Tennesse~ on April 26, 1990 at the 6ffices cf Univetsal Testing L*boratcries to discuss a relatively new automatic
. ~ielding process - Narrow Gap Welding.
F1ve staff personnel {a mi)(_ of Proje.cts**
and Materials.. & Chemical Erig-inet:ring Brarth) listened.to a presentation of the.. *
~arrow Gap ~eld method and obseived a demonstratio~ of the proces~ in the
. Univers&l Testing Laboratories workshop. is-* the list of

The Narrow Gap_ Meld *process,_ ~sed Of! nun_1er9u_s_ ~ur~Re(!n_ NucJe.ar Facilities
. since *1985,. is* ~ilated. to *be used in its first U.S. application during the Palisades Steam Generator Replacement Project this winter. A total of te~
primary coolant.piping cuts are planned to be weldr:d *using the Narrow _Gap
- t'method..
Narrow Gap.weldi~g has the following advantages*ov~r. ~anual arc welding:
o.Reduced. weld volume and weld time
- o. A ~maller heat-affected zone res~lt{ng.in a reduction in shrinkage
- {which can_ be condOcive to cracking) o Automation of the welding operations o Even production of root, thereby fa~ilitating Ul o
Const~nt quality and reproducibility of ffiechanical properties of the welded joint 9005220~~~ 90Q~i§ ~

The**stated disadv~nt.age to Narrow Gap Welding is tha*t proper fitup is more critical due to the smaller weld width.. This. problem is alleviated by using la~ers to assist in the fit up process~
Personn~l trainin~ and qualification, procedure ~~alification, and UT techniques were also discussed *. Additionally, a demonstration* of UT using test blocks was conducted.
Finally, radiographs from qual.ification welds were reviewed and discussed.
The licensee is in. the process of drafting a 50.59 analysis detailing the primary coolant system piping cuts and the Narrow Gap Welding process..This*.
analysis is scheduled to be tompleted June IS, 1990 and will be subsequ¢ntly*:
reviewed.
