Gentlemen:

Subject:

Inspection

Report Nos.

50-220/85-11

50-410/85-20

70-2948/85-01

This refers to the routine, safety inspection

conducted

by Mr.

R.

L. Nimitz of

this office on June 24-28,

1985, at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Units

1 and 2.

The findings of the inspection

were discussed

with Messers.

Roman

and

Abbott'he

inspection of Unit

1 covered:

radioactive material

handling, control

and

shipping;

high radiation area controls,

and radiological controls personnel

training.

The inspection of Unit 2 covered:

preoperational

testing of radio-

active waste

processing

systems;

the radiological control organization;

staffing; training; radioactive material control

and IE Bulletin 80-, 10.

Within the

scope of this review,

no violations were identified and

no reply to

this letter is required.

The inspection of Unit

1 found that

an acceptable

radioactive waste

shipping program was in place.

The inspection of Unit 2

found that action is on-going to establish

an effective radiological controls

organization

to support

combined Unit

1 and Unit 2 operations.

It appears

that

additional

emphasis

should

be placed

on installing, testing,

and calibrating

the Unit 2 process

and effluent radiation monitoring equipment to ensure that

the equipment is available to support your fuel loading plans.

The current

status of the equipment

does

not appear

to be commensurate

with the fuel load
