SUBJECT:
,SCHEDULE FOR THE RADIOLOGICAL SAFETY REVIEW OF THE SUS(UEHANNA STEAM ELECTRIC 'STATION, UNITS 1
AND 2 This letter discusses the establishment of a schedule for the safety review of your application for operating licenses for the Susquehanna Steam Electric
- Station, Units 1 and 2 docketed on July 31, 1978.
The environmental review schedule has already'been sent to you.
- We have evaluated our workload, and estimate that our Safety Evaluation 1980, with a subsequent Prospective summary of the important milestones your information.
based on this resource evaluation we Report could be published by March 24, Decision Date by December 19, 1980.
A of that target schedule is enclosed for We appreciate, as discussed in our November 28 meeting, your views that
'completi'on of construction of Unit 1 could occur as early as March 1980.
In that light, we agreed to reevaluate the schedule this coming February when completion of first round questions should be accomplished.
With your assessment of when the responses can be provided, and an updated construction review by the Caseload Forecast Panel in March or April, we will reevaluate the staff review schedule to try to find a way to assure that the licensing and construction schedules are compatible.
To this end, I believe iQ would be useful if the results of the first'rehearing conference were available by this time to assist us in estimating the hearing contribution to the overall schedule.
It will be equally important in trying to accelerate this review that any matters of disagreement or areas of uncertainty uhich might arise should be discussed promptly with the project manager.,
If he cannot resolve them 7f'/ ~/goy 7 orrscc~

- himself, he will arrange for a meeting with appropriate management to discuss them.
This will avoid unnecessary schedule delays.
Beyond that, it will be especially important to keep in close touch with the project manager over the next several months to make sure that all of these interim activities stay on schedule so that it will be possible to make a meaningful reassessment by the flarch/April time period.
Mr. Sydney Miner 3 the project manager, can be reached at (301) 492-7896.
