Dear Mr. Denton:

Carolina Power R Light Company (CPRL) hereby informs you of revisions to the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant (SHNPP) Pre-Service Inspection (PSI) program nondestructive testing and acceptance criteria.

In a March 13, 1983, PSI program submittal, CPdcL stated:

"10 CFR 50.55(a) establish (sic) the edition of [ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code] Section XI applicable to the PSI of the Reactor Pressure Vessel based upon the construction permit. which was issued on 3anuary 27, 1978.

However, it is the intention of-CPttrL to comply with the requirements of Section XI, 1980 Edition with Addenda through Winter 1981.

This represents a voluntary upgrade from the applicable 1970 Edition, Summer 1975 Addenda....CPRL feels that this code upgrade willmeet the intent of 10 CFR 50.55(a) and Section XI".

Furthermore, in a March 7, 1980 submittal of the PSI Program Plan(ISI-201), CPRL stated:

"The scope of examinations, procedures and acceptance criteria meet the requirements outlined in Section XI of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,

'Rules for Inservice Inspection of Nuclear Power Plant Components,'980

Edition, with Addenda through Winter 1981."

In September 1985, the NRC amended 10 CFR 50.55(a) to permit the use of the ASME Section XI, 1980 Edition with Addenda through Winter 1982.

Therefore, CPRL has revised the SHNPP PSI program to upgrade the nondestructive testing and acceptance criteria to comply with ASME Section XI, 1980 Edition with Addenda through Winter 1982.
