SERIAL: NLS-85-238 AUG 0 5 )S85 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT UNIT NO. 1 DOCKET NO.50-000 LOOSE PARTS MONITORING SYSTEM CALIBRATION

Dear Mr. Denton:

By letter dated October 28, 1983, Carolina Power R Light Company (CPRL) submitted a detailed description of the Metal Impact Monitoring System (MIMS) used at the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant. The NRC reviewed this submittal and found it to be an acceptable response to the Draft Safety Evaluation Report Open Item No. 30, as documented on page 0-30 of the Safety Evaluation Report. In the October 28, 1983 submittal,Section II.A, Items 2 and 3, CPRL described the methods to be used to calibrate the accelerometers and conduct system tests. The calibration described in that submittal involved removing the accelerometers from their installed locations, mounting the accelerometers on a vibration calibrator and observing the output of the accelerometer. The system test consisted of impacting the reactor vessel or steam generator in the vicinity of the accelerometer and observing the response of the system. In lieu of these tests, CPRL will perform testing and calibration using a tool that provides a calibrated impact (e.g., 0.5 ft.-lbs.). The tool will be used to verify that each channel alarms upon an impact within a specified distance (e.g., 0.5 ft.-lbs. at a distance of 3 ft.). Such a test conforms with the recommendations of Regulatory Guide 1.133 Position C.a.(3) and provides a means to calibrate the accelerometers without removal of the monitors. We find that this change is acceptable because it provides the same level of assurance that the MIMS is operating properly and it provides a test which is in conformance with the recommendations of Regulatory Guide 1.133.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Yours very truly,,
