Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant Draft SER Open Item Revised Res onse This is a revised response to Item 14 from Carolina Power 6 Light's September 21, 1983 submittal.

The previous response committed to weekly sampling of the service water system for radioactivity.

This commitment is acceptable only if the following additional items are addressed as appropriate for the component cooling water (CCW) system, waste processing closed cooling water (WPCCW) system, and service water (SW) system:

1.

Weekly sample and analysis of the

CCW, WPCCW, and SW systems.

Daily sampling and analysis of the CCW system and service water system if the CCW monitor is inoperable.

Daily sampling and analysis of the WPCCW system and service water system if the WPCCW monitor is inoperable.

2.

Daily sample and analysis of the service water discharge when the CCW or WPCCW concentration is > 10 pCi/cc.

3.

Sampling and analysis of the service water once per 12 hours1.388889e-4 days
0.00333 hours
1.984127e-5 weeks
4.566e-6 months
when the activity level in the CCW (or WPCCW) is > 10 iCi/cc and leakage is confirmed from the CCW (or WPCCW) to the service water system.

4.

Installation of a rate-of-change alarm which will indicate a decreasing liquid g evel in the CCW or WPCCW head tank based upon detecting an LLD-10 PCi/ cc.

~Res oese The design of the service water system willbe modified to include a liquid radiation monitor downstream of all inputs to the system.

The added monitor obviates the need for sampling of the service water system outlined in the NRC's position.

Sampling of the service water system will be performed when the radiation monitor is out of service.

The sampling frequency willbe addressed in the SHNPP Technical Specifications.
