Dear Hr. O'Reilly:

As requested by IE Bulletin 80&8, Carolina Power

& Light Company (CP&L) has reviewed the design of the containment liner penetration welds for the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant (SHNPP).

The results of that review are presented below:

1 ~

The SHNPP containment penetrations are designed in accordance with ASME Code Section III, Subsection NE, Figure NE-1120-1.

This is reflected on the applicable drawing.

2.

The applicable Code for field welding between the flued head and

.outer sleeve is ASME Section III, Division 1, 1974 edition, 1976 winter addenda, to class MC with no stamping.

3.

The weld will be examined by radiography as specified by the applicable drawing.

The type of weld joint is 37 1/2 bevel and the welding will be made using either an open butt joint with a welding process GTAW root and SHAW weld out or with a backing ring using the SHAW process.

5.

These welds have not been made as of this date.
