Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
On March 12, 1980, the Region II office (Mr. R. Bradley) was notified by the Carolina Power
& Light Company (CP&L) of a potentially reportable item regarding welding defects in Westinghouse supplied component cooling water heat exchangers.
As indicated during an April 11, 1980, telephone conversation with your Mr. J.
K. Rausch, CP&L has not completed its evaluation of this matter as related to reportability under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e) and 10CFR, Part 21.
Xt is now anticipated that this evaluation will be completed by May 12, 1980, at which time the NRC will be notified of our decision.
