Dear Mr. Denton:
During the review of the Shearon Haxris Nuclear Power Plant (SHNPP),
your staff requested that Carolina Power
& Light Company (CP&L) conduct a
re-evaluation of SHNPP's proposed fire protection provisions and that we com-pare those provisions with the guidelines contained in Appendix A to Branch Technical Position APCSB 9.5-1, "Guideline for Fire Protection for Nuclear Power Plants Docket Prior to July 1, 1976."
Carolina Power
& Light Company provided this re-evaluation and proposed design modifications in Amendment 54 to the SHNPP Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR), submitted on April 29, 1977.
In Supplement 3 to the SHNPP Safety Evaluation Report (SER) issued on July 30, 1977, your staff indicated that they were reviewing the information along with the revised design features of the plant fire protection and would provide CP&L with the results of their evaluation on a timely basis so that any additional modifications could be incorporated into SHNPP's final design.
Your staff concluded in Supplement 3 to the SER, that CP&L's application was acceptable with respect to fire protection for the construction permit stage of review.
We understand that your staff is reviewing fire protection evaluations from all plants on a priority system basis that would result in beginning SHNPP's'valuation review in late spring, 1979 at the earliest.
We are presently con-structing the plant and purchasing equipment to meet the requirements contained in the SHNPP PSAR. If your staff has any reason to believe that our fire protec-tion evaluation contained in the PSAR will not meet your requirements, we request that you expedite your review of our submittal so that construction and procurement does not proceed beyond the point where changes can be economically made.
Please let us know if there is any additional information that you need to complete youx review of the SHNPP fire protection evaluation.
