This letter acknowledges our receipt of Carolina Power

& Light Company's (CP&L) letter of September 8,

1992, in response to NRC concerns related to high-head safety injection system (HHSI) degradation at the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1

(SHNPP).

Based on our review of your submittals and a teleconference discussion between Frank Orr of the NRC and T. Clement of your staff on October 1,

1992, we request that you further submit a "realistic" analysis of the limiting size SBLOCA at SHNPP.

This analysis should assume HHSI performance consistent with its "as found" degraded condition.

As discussed in the October 1,

1992, teleconference with your staff, we may request additional

analyses, as determined by our evaluation of the results of the above requested "realistic" analysis and the conclusions of NRC audit analyses.

This requirement affects nine or fewer respondents and, therefore, is not subject to Office of Management and Budget review under P.L.96-511.
