WAKESOUTH REGIONAL AIRPORT AIRCRAFT HAZARDS STUDY REVIEW SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, UNIT I (TAC NO. 74338)
By letter dated April ll, 1990, Mr. Steven Varga informed you that we were reviewing the data and methodology of the hazards study used in your January 17, 1990, submittal and that when we had completed our review that we would forward our comments to you.
We have completed our review and our comments are enclosed.
Briefly, the results of our review may be summarized as follows.
Our review focused on the probability of aircraft'crashes damaging the safety-related facilities at the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1 (Harris).
Our review indicates that the Harris site meets the acceptance criteria in Section 3.5.1.6 of the Standard Review Plan, provided that the operational levels of the proposed airport will not significantly exceed the 10-year projection described in the study.
However, there is a concern with respect to the potential for future growth of aviation activities after the proposed airport begins to operate.
Our review indicates that an expansion, involving more frequent flights and heavier aircraft, could increase the risks of aircraft crashes well above the risks that are currently projected and could have a significant impact on the continued safe operation of Harris.
Therefore, you are expected to assess.
the impact of projected changes and update the FSAR when such projections'ignificantly exceed that described in the present study.
