Raymond F. Fraley Executive Director, ACRS/ACNW FROM:
SUBJECT:
Victor Stello, Jr.
Executive Director for Operations DR. MOELLER'S SUGGESTIONS REGARDING WHOLE-BODY COUNTING AT NUCLEAR POWER STATIONS m
I am replying to your memorandum of December 5, 1988, that forwarded Dr. Dade Moeller's suggestions (in a November 28, 1988, letter to you) regard-ing certain aspects of whole-body counting at nuclear power stations.
We have asked Region II to forward to Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant Dr. Moeller's suggestion of informing their visitors that whole-body counters calibrated for the detection of fission 'products will not necessarily provide accurate data for naturally occurring potassium-40:
As Dr. Moeller's other suggestions on whole-body counters deal mainly. with the administrative aspects of a program; they will be considered for incorporation into future revisions of regulatory guides on'he subject of bioassay (which includes whole-body counting).
Revis'ions of, these "guides ar'e'scheduled to be completed before the effective date for 'implementation of the major revision of 10 CFR Part 20.
The staff wishes to thank Dr,. Moeller for providing these suggestions.
