Dear Mr. Denton:
In response to a request from your staff, CPRL hereby submits additional information confirming actions taken during the October 1986 emergency exercise.
The local counties (Lee, Harnett, Chatham and Wake) did participate in the exercise to the extent committed to in our letter dated May 2, 1986 (NLS-86-157). Also, the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant public alert and notification system was activated during this exercise.
The sirens were activated and an emergency signal was broadcast by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)which activated the tone alert radios.
The Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) was also used to deliver a test message to the public. Positive verification was obtained that the sirens operated properly and that the NOAA and EBS transmitters did broadcast messages to the public.
