CRT Carolina Power & Light Company Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.
C.
20555 SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT UNIT NOS. 1, 2, 3, AND 4 DOCKET NOS. 50-400, 50-401, 50-402, AND 50-403 EXPOSURE OF SITE FAULT IN WEST AUXILIARYDAM FOUNDATION
Dear Mr. Denton:
A fault was discovered in the plant excavation area on July 3, 1974, and traced by a series of fault exploration trenches to the auxiliary dam spill-way area.
At that time the fault was traced to trench FET 22W-74 which is at the top and northeast side of the auxiliary dam core trench.
Results of this fault investigation were reported by Carolina Power 6 Light Company to the NRC in a report entitled "Fault Investigation Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant Units 1, 2, 3, 4" dated February, 1975.
Based on that investigation and subsequent
- hearings, the NRC concluded that this fault was not capable as defined in Appendix A to 10CFR 100.
As anticipated, excavation of the auxiliary dam core trench near the spillway has exposed this fault at Station 4+20.
This was verbally re-ported to your staff on May 8, 1979.
Because this fault was previously in-vestigated and concluded to be not capable, Carolina Power 6 Light Company does not intend to investigate this fault further.
The new exposure of the fault will be documented by mapping during the routine mapping sequence for that area of the auxiliary dam core trench.
Yours very truly, M. A. McDuf ie Senior Vice President Engineering and Construction MAM/tl cc:
Mr. James P. O'Reilly
