RESPONSE

TO IE BULLETIN 78-02

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

In response to IE Bulletin 78-02, Carolina Power

& Light Company submitted a letter on March 1, 1978, which stated that no unprotected tertjtinal blocks had been used in electrical and instrumentation and control systems designed by our architect/engineer.

The letter, however, also stated that a vendor survey was necessary for mechanical components purchased by Ebasco and that components supplied by Westinghouse, the Nuclear Steam Supply System sup-plier, required review.

These investigations are now complete.

The results of these investigations show that no unprotected safety related terminal blocks are used in any systems within the containment that must function in a post-accident environment.

This completes Carolina Power

& Light Company's response to IE Bulletin 78-02 in connection with the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant.

If you have any questions concerning this matter, please contact our staff.

Yours very truly, M. A. McDuffie Senior Vice President Engineering
