Dear Mr. Mattson:

The attached letter from Mr. M. A. McDuffie to Mr. Harold R. Denton dated November 21, 1978, requested that the review of our proposed fire pro-tection provisions for the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant (SHNPP) be expedited so that construction and procurement does not proceed beyond the point where changes can be economically made.

In our meeting of December 13, 1978, you requested that we inform you of the status of construction with regard to our fire protection system. Briefly, as of January 1, 1979, the overall construction of SHNPP Unit 1 was approximately 12 percent complete with the remaining units less than one percent complete. Addi.

tionally, the procurement activity on our fire protection system is progressing to the point where changes could be costly. The fire water pumps for the system have been procured and are on-site. The procurement technical specifications for the fire detection system are scheduled to be issued for inquiry on January 25, 1979, and the procurement technical specifications for the fire doors will be issued shortly thereafter. The design of the underground piping loop and internal containment and turbine building piping has been released for fabrication. The sprinkler system procurement technical specification has been prepared by Ebasco and sent to us for final review prior to inquiry.

Again, if your staff has any reason to believe that our fire protection system as contained in the SHNPP Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR) will not meet your requirements, we request that you expedite your review in order to alleviate costly changes in our construction and procurement activity. Please if let us know there is any additional information you need to complete your
