Dear Mr. Jones:

I

SUBJECT:

SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT UNITS 1, 2, 3 AND 4 - METEOROLOGY In supplement No; 3 to the Safety Evaluation Report '(SER) we stated that "in order to confirm the atmospheric diffusion estimates, we require that the applicant modify its onsite meteorological program at the Shearon Harris site to minimize uncertainties in the data recording system, particularly for stable conditions under light winds.

Utilizing a revised system acceptable to the staff, we further require the applicant to provide a one-full year period of onsite meteorological

data, which meets the recoomendations of Regulatory Guide 1.23, prior to submitting the Final Safety Analysis Report."

In response to this requirement in a letter from M. S. McDuffie to Harold R. Denton, dated November 9, 1978 you proposed to replace the "pulse-o-matic" system currently used to log onsite meteorological data with a n'iji,-computer system.

The system is described in attach'mept "A"

to your letter.

We have evaluated the information provided in attachment "A" and find that the proposed mini-computer system is acceptable for satisfying our,require-ments for a revised onsite meteorological program at the Shearon Harris site.

Please advise us when you expect to satisfy the remainder of the requirement by provj~ding the minimum one year period of onsite meteorological data.

Sincerely, 0 2enCi Si 0L 18ll~ pe
