~3oo e:

Control of silica in steam plant systems and make up water systems is necessary to minimize the formation of deposits on turbine blades.

3.2

~Pur oee:

The purpose of this procedure is to provide laboratory personnel with an approved method for determining dissolved silica in water.

4.0 Instructions

NOTE:

The use of glass containers for sampling and storage of reagents should be avoided, to prevent against Si02 contamination.

4.1 Sample Pre aration:

4.1.1 Transfer each of the following into a suitably sized poly-bottle.

a.

50 ml of sample I'

)PDR, 4.1. 2 b.

50 ml of silica free water c.

50 ml of each of the two standards (see 4.2.4)

To each container add in quick succession;'2.5 ml. of 1:4 HCl, and

2. 0 ml of ammonium molyb da te solution.

DETERMINATION OF DISSOLVED SILICA (0-2.0 m) ll/21/7g 4.1.3 Swirl to mix, let stand for five minutes.

4.1.4 Add 1.5 ml of Oxalic Acid Solution, swixl and let stand one minute.

4.1.5 Add 2.0 ml of amino acid, swirl and let stand two minutes.

While

waiting, go on to step 4.2 or 4.3.

4.2 Usin the Spectronic 70:

4.2.1 Set wave length to 815 nm.

4.2.2 C

Zero the Spec 70 using a 20 mm cell filled to the mark or above with demineralized water.

4.2.3 When ready to read samples, fill20 mm tube to mark with sample blank and read.

(If reading is greater than 0.03, new reagents should be substituted.)

Re-zero meter.

4.2.4 Perform a two-point standardization 1.0 ppm and 0.5 ppm Si02 to check the calibration.

The values from 'these readings should agree proportionally within +15%, i.e., the 0.5 ppm Si02 standard should read about one-half the 1.0 ppm Si02 standard.

If these results are not obtained, notify lab supervisor or designee.

4.2.5 Read remaining samples and use the following formula to determine ppm Si02.

absorbance ppm Si02 of of unknown standard absoxbance of standard 4.2.6 Record results.

4.3 Usin the S ectronic 100:

NOTE:

The electronic calibration of the Spec 100 should be performed daily, as per the Spec 100 calibration card in the tickler file.

4.3.1 Set wavelength to 815 nm.

4.3.2 Set mode selection knob to absorbance.

4. 3.3 Zero the meter using a

20 mm test tube filled to the mark or above with demineralized water.

4.3.4 When ready to read, filla 20 mm test tube to mark or above with sample blank.

(If blank indicates a reading.above 0.03, new reagents should be substitutecf.)

Re-zero the meter.

4. 3.5 Fill a test tube to mark or above with high standard.

Turn mode selection knob to concentration with decimal in desired location.

4.3.6 Adjust concentration to value of high standard using concentration adjust knob.

NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY PROCEDURE NC-87, PAGE' DETERMINATION OF DISSOLVED SILICA (0-2.0 m) 11/21/79 4.3.7 Next, filla 20 mm tube to mark or above with low standard, and read value.

This value should agree within +15% of the expected value.

If these results are not obtained, notify lab supervi'sor or designee.

4.3.8 Read remai~ning samples directly in ppm and record.
