IO/I/79 Hydrazine is added to the feedwater to control oxygen and should be maintained at a concentration at least 5 ppb higher than the dissolved oxygen concen-tration.

3.2

This procedure provides instructions for the determination of hydrazine concentration in plant water samples.

4.0 Xnstructions

4.1 Precautions

4.1.1 'Obtain all samples in polyethylene bottles and minimize their exposure to air.

4.1.2 Allow the sample streams to flow for an adequate time to insure that the samples will be representative and not turbid.

DETERMINATION OF HYDRAZINE CONCENTRATION IO/I/79 4.3 Sam le Pre aration:

4.3.1 Transfer each of the following into separate 125 ml Erlenmeyer flasks:

a.

100 ml sample b.

100 ml deionized water (blank) c.

100 ml of each of two standards at 50 ppb and 100 ppb concentra-tion (see 4.4.4 and 4.5.6) 4.3.2 Add 5 ml of DAB reagent to each flask.

Swirl and stopper the flasks.

4.3.3 Let stand for 15 minutes but not more than 100 minutes.

4.3.4 Hhile waiting for color development go on to step 4.4 or 4.5.

4.4 Usin the S ectronic 70:

4.4.1 Turn on instrument and allow 5 minutes for warm up.

4.4.2 Set wavelength at 458 nm.

4.4.3 When ready to read'he samples, filla 20 mm optical cell with the

'lank and use this to zero the instrument.

4 ~ 4 ~ 4 Perform a two point standardization using the 50 ppb and 100 ppb standards.

Read and record the absorbance readings.

The value of the 50 ppb standard should be 50% of the 100 ppb standard

+10%.

If this result is not obtained, notify the lab supervisor or his designee.

If a two point standardization has been run earlier in the day, a single standard is sufficient.

4.4.5 Read the remaining samples and use the following formula to determine hydrazine concentration in ppb:

4.5 Usin the S ectronic 100:

NOTE:

The electronic calibration of the Spec 100 should be performed daily as per the Spec 100 calibration card in the tickler file.

4.5.1 Turn on instrument and allow-5 minutes for warm up.

4.5.2 Set wavelength for 458 nm.

4.5.3 5/hen ready to read the samples, filla 20 mm optical cell with the blank, set'he mode selection knob to absorbance and zero the instrument.

Turn the mode selection knob to concentration with the decimal in the desired location.

Adjust the concentration to the value of the high standard using the concentration adjust knob.

Fill a 20 mm optical cell with the low standard and read the value.

The low standard should read 50% of the high standard

+10%. If this result is not obtained, notify the lab supervisor or his designee.

If a two point standardization has been run earlier in the day, one standard is sufficient.

Read the N2H4 concentration of the remaining 'samples directly and record the results.
