Dear Hr. Goldberg:

SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE REGARDING OPERATING HISTORY OF SELECTED TURKEY POINT FUEL ASSEMBLIES The purpose of this letter is to request assistance from FPL, as discussed with Hr. T. Grozan of your licensing staff on May 7, 1990.

The NRC staff is in the process of revising Regulatory Guide 3.54, "Spent Fuel Heat Generation in an Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation," with the help of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

This revision process includes comparison of spent fuel heat rate measurements with those predicted by the ORIGEN - S/SAS2 computer code.

Fuel from Turkey Point was used in spent fuel calorimetric measurements supporting earlier efforts in this area.

Enclosure 1 is a letter from ORNL to our Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (RES) requesting specific information.

Of most interest to ORNL is a detailed operating history for fuel assemblies D-15, D-22, D-34 and B-43, the first three of which were discharged from the Unit 3 reactor on November 19, 1977, while the latter assembly was discharged on October 25, 1975.

Enclosure 2 provides for your information excerpts from a 1980 report of work done at Hanford Engineering Development Laboratory under contact to the U.S.

Department of Energy.

The Turkey Point fuel assemblies were part of that study also.
