INTAKE COOLING WATER SYSTEM DISCUSSIONS AND SITE VISIT-TURKEY POINT UNITS 3 AND 4 (TAC NOS.

Enclosure 1 is a copy of our staff's trip report of the November 4 and 5, 1987 Turkey Point site visit.

The purpose of the visit was to discuss recent operating events involving the intake cooling water (ICW) systems at Turkey Point.

The discussions included details of the ICW systems, survei llance

programs, reportable
events, root causes of the events, corrective actions-(short and long term) and proposed upgrades to the systems.

Walkdowns o'f the systems were made to observe the design implementation and component configura-tions.

At the request of the Region II Office, the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regula-tion addressed several concerns relating to the operation of the ICII systems.

He have discussed these concerns with members of your staff.

Enclosure 2 is the Safety Evaluation (SE) provided to the Region which includes the details and basis for our findings and conclusions.

The results of the site visit and discussions of the ICW systems will be factored into a case study report by our Office of Analysis and Evaluation of Operational Data as indicated in Enclosure 1.

The trip report and SE are provided for your information and require no response.

The cooperation and responsiveness of your staff during the site visit were greatly appreciated.
