Letter 161-00551-JGH/PGN, dated October 1, 1987, from J. G. Haynes, APS, to NRC, "Spray Pond Monitoring Program"

Dear Sirs:

Subject:

Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (PVNGS)

Units 1, 2, and 3 Docket Nos. STN 50-528/529/530 Spray Pond Monitoring Program Schedule Change File: 92-056-026 PVNGS Technical Specification 6.8.4.f. requires the spray ponds to be monitored in accordance with PVNGS Station Manual Procedures.

Currently, the administrative procedure requires operating the spray pond system with flowdirected through the spray nozzles every other day.

This frequency was established in the referenced letter.

In November 1991, Arizona Public Service Company identified that the Unit 1 spray ponds were only being circulated three times per week in some instances.

This issue was documented and corrected in accordance with the PVNGS Quality Assurance Program.

Spray pond circulation, in conjunction with chemical additions, is necessary to control microbiological activity and piping corrosion.

Spray pond chemistry data from Unit 1, which had been circulated three times per week, was compared to spray pond chemistry data from Unit 2, which had been circulated at the required frequency of every other day.

This comparison indicated that there was essentially no difference in the microbiological activity and piping corrosion between the two frequencies of circulation.

Based on the results of this comparison, the frequency for operating the spray pond system will be changed to.three times per week.

This reduced frequency will also reduce pump starts and provide additional operating flexibility.
