This is in response to your letter of January 4, 5983 concerning qualifi-cations of shift technical advisors (STAs) at Calvert Cliffs Units 1 and 2.

By our letter of July 9, 1982 Me stated that BG&E's STA training program was acceptable.

This finding <ms partially based upon the under>>

standing that, although some individuals to be trained as STAs did not have a bachelor degree or the equivalent in a scientific or engineering.

discipline, they >>ere highly.experienced senior reactor operators (SROs).

ltith regard to the four individuals referenced in your letter of January 4, 1983 tycho had been promoted to SRO status. prior to our letter of July 9, 1982, it is our position that these individuals can be trained as STAs provided that they have sufficient experience.

Ile wool8 be willing to revieiv the qualifications of(these individuals for acceptability as.

candidates for your STA training program.

It.is our position, however, that STA candidates, other. than the four individuals referenced in your January 4, 1983 letter, have a bacheor degree oi'he equivalent in a scientific or engineering discipline pending final determination of'uch requirements by the NRC.

Dear Nr,

Lundvall:

Gray File HBooher This is in response to your letter of January 4, 1983 concerning qualifi-cations of shift technical advisors (STAs) at Calvert Cliffs Units 1 and 2.

By our letter of July 9, 1982 we stated that BG&E's STA training program was acceptable.

This finding was partially based upon the undev-standing that. although some individuals to be trained as STAs did not have a bachelor degree or the equivalent in a scientific'v engineering discipline, they weve highly.experienced senior reactor operators (SROs).

With vegard to the four individuals referenced in your letter of January 4, 1983 who had been promoted to SRO status prior to our letter of July 9, 1902, it is ouv position that these individuals can, be trained as STAs pvovided that they have sufficient.experience.

Ds a general guideline, sufficient experience. for these non-degreed individuals can be considered to be a minimum of five (5) years experience as a licensed control room operator.

Me would be willing, however, to review the qualifications of ihdividuals'ith less than five (5) years experience for acceptability as candidates for your STA training program.

It.is our position, however, that STA candidates, other than the four individuals referenced in your January 4, 1903 letter, have a bachelor degree or. the equivalent in a scientific or engineering discipline pending final determination of such requirements by the NRC.
